“STEWARDSHIP -- A
Disciple’s Way of Life!”
In this weekend’s second reading, St. Paul tells the Romans, “God’s gifts and His call are irrevocable.” To what is God calling me today? What gifts are mine to share?
(From
Stewardship By The Book, by Sharon
Hueckel. Used with permission.)
In the modern world, things that used to be considered permanent — “irrevocable” — like marriage, faith, love, are now thought of as lasting only as long as they are convenient for the parties involved. No wonder people long for security and cannot find it! Only in God do we find what is forever true.
FAITH FACTS: On August 22nd we
celebrate the feast of the Queenship of Mary. This feast was inserted in the
calendar for the Universal Church by Pope Pius XII in 1954, the 100th
anniversary of the proclamation of the Immaculate Conception as a dogma. On
this occasion we contemplate her who, seated beside the King of Ages, shines
forth as Queen and intercedes as Mother.
WEEKLY REFLECTION
Twentieth
Sunday in Ordinary Time
Today’s Gospel
recounts the story of a Canaanite woman who asked Jesus to help her daughter
who was possessed by a demon. Although Jesus ignores her, she keeps after him
and in the end her faith is rewarded. It is easy to think that our time and
energy should be devoted to those in our own community and ignore the needs of
others. But that is not what discipleship is about. We are called to serve
others according to the talents and resources we have. It is not required that
we even like those who need help. It is not our place to judge their
“worthiness.” We are simply to do what we can to help others.
Thus says the Lord:
Observe what is right, do what is just.
~Isaiah 56:1

“GEE, I THOUGHT THE BUILDING FUND AND THE CAPITAL CAMPAIGN WAS THE
SAME!”
A typical question
that people ask is “What is the
difference between the Building Fund and the Capital Campaign?” People often think it is one and the same but it is not.
The Building Fund money is used for on-going maintenance and repairs of our
church facility. The Capital Campaign is the vehicle which we set up two years
ago, where people pledged on a five-year commitment to pay for our addition to
the Parish Hall, Kitchen and new Classroom Wing. If you pledged, you should
have a payment book for either monthly, quarterly, semi-annual or annual
payments. Thanks.

CYCLES
OF FAITH
20th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Inspirational speaker W Mitchell is world famous for his talks on persistence. He should know: a motorcycle accident left him burned over sixty-five percent of his body and cost him his fingers; and a plane crash paralyzed him from the waist down. His message is that, of the 10,000 things he used to be able to do, now he can do 9,000. Why focus on the other 1,000? His faith in the persistence of the human spirit is powerful.
In today's Gospel reading from Matthew, Jesus is confronted by a woman asking for her daughter to be cleansed of demons. Notice that she does not ask Jesus if he is Lord before making her request, she already knows. Jesus does not answer her right away; when she again pleads for his mercy and refers to him as Lord, he grants her wish because of her persistence and her faith.
Enabling this woman's persistence was her hope. Hope for goodness is the promise of God given through Jesus; it is the anchor of our soul, and it allows us to be happy even in the face of adversity. Hope is expressed and nourished in prayer (CCC 1820). Perhaps you've been praying for something but feel your prayers haven't been answered? Continue to pray. Be persistent in your faith; never lose hope.

WORSHIP & SPIRITUALITY
Twentieth
Sunday in Ordinary Time Year A
We Are
All Part of God’s Plan
1st
Reading: Isaiah. My house
shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples.
2nd
Reading: Romans. God
delivered all to disobedience, that he might have mercy upon all.
Gospel: Matthew. Jesus said to the Canaanite woman,
“I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.”
Thoughts to ponder:
God has expanded his
plan of salvation to include all nations so that all nations might praise God’s
name.
Questions:
How does Jesus’
response to the women change in the course of the gospel story? Why?
In the second
reading, how does the inclusion of the Gentiles in God’s plan of salvation
affect the “unbelieving” Jews?
What does God’s
unconditional acceptance of all peoples say to us about our dealing with those
who are not “like” us?
Have you ever
participated in an interreligious dialogue? What happened?
When has the faith
of someone from another race or culture enriched your own?
What could you do to
help someone of another race or culture feel more welcome in your neighborhood?
Social Justice
& Peace
