WEEKLY REFLECTION

Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

The parable of the Good Samaritan gives us so many things to reflect on. Consider why some people passed by the injured man and why one chose to help. None of them were “bad” people. In fact the one who chose to help the man was considered to be at the bottom of the social scale. Look at your own behavior when you see someone in need. What things do you consider in deciding if you should help them? What has kept you from helping someone and what has made you willing to put yourself out? How do your motives reflect God’s love and the teachings of Christ? Next time you see someone in need, try asking yourself: What would Jesus do?

The Lord hears the poor,

and his own who are in bonds he spurns not.

~Psalm 69:33

DUE TO AN EARLY BULLETIN DEADLINE, THE FINANCIAL REPORT FOR JULY 4TH, WILL BE PUBLISHED NEXT WEEKEND.

HAVE A FAMILY PORTRAIT TAKEN FOR FREE, GET A FREE DIRECTORY!

When is the last time you had a formal family portrait taken? When is the last time that you went to church and knew all the people by name and face sitting around you in the pew? If it's been a while, and you know you don't know everyone at church - here's an idea: Get shot! St. Max and the parish cluster are putting together a directory, and we want the entire parish community to be featured in it.

Please participate! It's an opportunity to get a free family portrait in exchange for having your family photo in the directory; at last, you and others will be able to put a name to face, face to name and we'll get to know each other better!!

Sign up is easy. You may sign up, on-line, by doing the following steps:

1. http://signup.olanmills.com <http://signup.olanmills.com/

2. Select: Schedule New Appointment/enter

3. Enter church phone number (207) 883-0334 on left, Enter photographer and church member information on right./enter

4. Choose either August or September to see available days for photo sessions.

5. Schedule your time.

The ideal would be to have every family/couple/individual in this directory. So, give it your best shot - schedule your appointment, spread the word, and smile for the camera. Once you have signed up on-line, please spread this e-mail and get your friends and family members to sign up too. Time is critical for reaching families that have kids in college - the best photo session times for them are likely in August. Spread the word!

We're also looking for volunteers to help during the photo sessions - we are looking for people to do the following:

1. Do reminder phone calls two days before the session.

2. Serve as host/sign-in person during each of the photo sessions.

Anyone interested in helping in either way, may e-mail me:

krvachon@earthlink.net. FMI contact Karen Vachon 730-2664. Thank you for your help.

CYCLES

OF FAITH

15th Sunday in Ordinary Time

One of the classic images in a catalogue of stained glass art is that of the good Samaritan. Along with the prodigal son, and Jesus blessing the children, the good Samaritan is one of the most commonly reproduced artistic scenes. Within 125 years of the first printed English Bibles the term "good Samaritan" came to have the figurative sense referring to anyone who helped a stranger in distress. Interestingly, the biblical text never uses the word "good" to describe the Samaritan. He is referred to as "neighbor" to the man who fell victim to robbers. Yet if someone refers to a person as a good Samaritan, we know instantly what is meant.

As we've all heard before, Samaritans were considered outcasts by Jews at the time of Jesus. Because they worshipped on Mt. Gerizim rather than in Jerusalem there were tensions between Jews and Samaritans that even escalated to violence that had to be quelled by the Roman occupiers. So it was a very pretty picture when the lawyer who questioned Jesus finds himself having to admit that it was the Samaritan who treated the robbers' victim with mercy.

What is our own understanding of who is our neighbor in the present day? The parable is such an enduring tale that its meaning has slipped into our common language. But that has happened at the expense of the story's punch line, and it is one that packs a real punch! Who are the outcasts or the despised in our day? What class of people have we found it difficult to accept? Or who might we find it easy to denigrate? The homeless? Immigrants? Muslims? Someone else? What if they were the Samaritan? Would we love the story as much if Jesus asked us today, "Which of these, in your opinion, was neighbor?" How would we answer?

WORSHIP & SPIRITUALITY

Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Acting with Mercy

Reading 1:  Deuteronomy (God’s command clear)

Reading 2: Colossians

(Christ’s fullness and reconciliation)

Gospel: Luke  The Good Samaritans

Key Passage: But a Samaritan, while traveling came near him; and when he saw him, he was moved with pity. He went to him and bandaged his wounds, having poured oil and wine on them. Then he put him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him.

Thoughts and Questions to Ponder:

Who is my neighbor?

Should I try to help the abandoned children in Bolivia and the mentally ill women in Nigeria?

Who are the Samaritans in our culture?

How can we do a little bit each month, so as not to feel overwhelmed with the stories of suffering? Learn more about what you can do by visiting Catholic Relief Services www.crs.org or write CRS Box 17090, Baltimore Maryland, 21203-7090.
