FAITH FACTS: On Saturday, August 14th, the Catholic Church celebrates the feast day of our patron Saint, Saint Maximilian Mary Kolbe. Father Kolbe died in Auschwitz on August 14th, 1941. He readily chose to give up his life to save the life of a young polish man with a wife and family who had been randomly selected to die after an inmate had escaped. Father Kolbe was canonized as the "Martyr of Charity" by Pope John Paul II in 1981. When we celebrate the feast day of a martyr or martyrs, we are reminded that practicing Christianity has not always been as easy as it can be for us today. We are also reminded that Christianity is not easily practiced in all the corners of the globe. One way that we can remember the sacrifices that those who lived before us made so we can practice our faith is, by making on-going sacrifices and offering them to God for those who cannot freely express their Faith.

BACK TO SCHOOL EFFORTS:  It’s hot outside, but it’s almost back to school time at Project G.R.A.C.E.   If you would like to help a family and their child (ren) prepare for school by providing items such as a backpack, lunchbox, colored pencils, markers, crayons, rulers, notebook paper, highlighters, glue or glue sticks, dividers, index cards and binders.  Look for collection bins in the Narthex at St. Max, First Congregational Church, cPort Credit Union, Michelle Raber Insurance Agency and Bessworth Community Services.  We will be collecting until 8/18.  You could also “adopt” a child to provide a backpack with grade appropriate supplies.  Please call us if you would like to adopt and we can match you up with a child.

DO YOU HAVE?:  The Project G.R.A.C.E. office is in need of a new of gently used laser printer that could handle 3000-10,000 copies per month, with network capability.  If you have one you are willing to donate, please let us know.

NEIGHBORS FORUM:   This fall Project G.R.A.C.E. will be planning and hosting a Neighbors Forum.  The purpose of this meeting is to help provide resources and solutions to neighbors in need this winter.  We hope to provide a positive discussion and outline a plan, perhaps to pool local resources and products.  It’s a very simple idea: share information, resources and gifts to improve the lives of others.  We invite your ideas and enthusiasm, if you or a group you belong to would like to be involved, please let us know.  Please check future bulletins for more information.

IF YOU KNOW: of anyone in the Greater Scarborough area, who is struggling to meet basic needs, please consider referring them to a volunteer at Project G.R.A.C.E.  Referrals can be done anonymously.  Call our office at 883-5111 or send an email to pgme@projectgracemaine.org

PROJECT G.R.A.C.E. NEEDS YOUR TIME AND TALENT!:   Project G.R.A.C.E. is taking a summer break from meetings.  We will resume our bi-weekly meetings in mid-September. If you can’t attend bi-weekly committee meetings, there are many other ways to volunteer, just give us a call and we can discuss opportunities.

“STEWARDSHIP  -- A Disciple’s Way of Life!”

Elijah recognized the voice of God not in the strong and heavy wind, not in the earthquake, and not in the fire, but in a tiny whispering sound.  May we find enough quiet in our clamorous world to hear God’s voice and discern what the Lord is calling us to do.

(From Stewardship By The Book, by Sharon Hueckel.  Used with permission.)

Commentary:

If a person who lived a hundred years ago suddenly appeared on earth, one of the first things she might notice is how full of sound our world is.  Radios, earphones, TVs, CDs and DVDs, the Internet, plus traffic, construction, airplanes, appliances, power tools.  “Where is the quiet?” our time traveler might ask.  Stewardship of time means devoting time to prayer, and prayer is usually better in the quiet.  Try making an activity that is usually accompanied by sound — a drive to work, say — a quiet time to listen for God’s voice.  Don’t be surprised if you hear a soft, “I am here.”

CYCLES

OF FAITH

19th Sunday in Ordinary Time

A couple of years ago, the American Psychological Association conducted a study on impulsiveness. From a group of 700 students, they selected thirty who drank at least four cups of coffee every day, and thirty who did not. Based on the research, it was found that the caffeine-dependent students were much more prone to acting impulsively than the others. Could this explain Peter's behavior at times? Probably not, but he was impulsive!

What is the significance of today's reading from Matthew? The disciples venture out into a boat, far away from Jesus. As a storm threatens, Jesus appears to calm them. But Peter, often speaking before he thinks, asks Jesus to prove that he is real. Peter's initial doubt causes him to sink before his faith saves him. When we find ourselves further from Jesus than we should be, does doubt cloud our faith?

Peter was prone to acts of impulsiveness such as this. But the Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches us that faith, indeed, is certain "because it is founded on the very word of God who cannot lie" (CCC 157). When times become very tough for you, and you may feel further from your faith than ever, it is precisely at this time when you should reach out for Jesus, just as Peter did, and you will find that he is closer to you than ever.

WEEKLY REFLECTION

Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Have you ever wished that God would just send you a letter and tell you what to do? We pray for all sorts of things and want to get an answer but more often than not, we feel disappointed. Things just don’t seem to go the way we wanted or expected them to go. God does answer. The problem is our ability to see and hear the answer! Like Elijah, we expect something dramatic while God is whispering in our ear. We need to learn to be still, look and listen. God’s message will often come in unexpected and seemingly insignificant ways that are easy to miss.

Get hold of yourselves!

It is I Do not be afraid.

~Matthew 14:27

WORSHIP & SPIRITUALITY

Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

1st Reading: 1 Kings: Elijah flees for his life and is guided by an angel to a mountain whereby he encounters God.

2nd. Reading: Romans: Paul makes a plea to the Israelites from whom the Messiah came. If only they would come to believe.

Gospel: Matthew gives another account of Jesus walking on the water.

Questions to Ponder:

What are some of the differences between Elijah’s encounter with God and the way Peter encounters Jesus, the Son of God?

Where else in the Bible are deserts, mountains and seas special places for people to encounter the God of Creation?

Adult: When have you doubted God’s loving care for you?

Child: What helps you to keep trying even when you are afraid?

He said, "Come." Peter got out of the boat and began to walk on the water toward Jesus. But when he saw how strong the wind was he became frightened; and, beginning to sink, he cried out, "Lord, save me!" Immediately Jesus stretched out his hand and caught Peter, and said to him, "O you of little faith, why did you doubt?" - Mt 14:29-31

FAITH FORMATION REGISTRATION: (K-12)

If you are new to Saint Maximilian Kolbe or have a child entering Kindergarten, please call the Catechetics Office (883-1742). Registration forms may be found on the shelf in the back of the Church. Volunteers are always needed for the catechetical sessions. (Last year, we had nearly 100). No one will be allowed to assist in a classroom without this documentation. Thank you for your cooperation. We want to keep all children safe at St. Maximilian Kolbe.
