THE SANCTUARY LAMP WILL BURN

THIS WEEK

AUGUST 24 ~ AUGUST 30

In Loving Memory of

“STEWARDSHIP  -- A Disciple’s Way of Life!”

In this weekend’s readings, St. Paul reminds the Romans—and us—that all things come from God:  “For from God and through God and for God all things are.” Good stewards understand that all is gift, so they share generously the gifts of time, talent, and treasure with which they have been blessed.

(From Stewardship By The Book, by Sharon Hueckel.  Used with permission.)

Commentary:

The musical “South Pacific” contained an important but not-so-well-known song: “You Have To Be Taught.”  The lyrics remind us that children are by nature accepting; they have to be taught to hate. Children are also giving; far too often, however, as they grow, they learn to say, “It’s mine, and you can’t have it!” Thus, most adults have to be taught how to share. Learning begins when a person recognizes and accepts that God gives us everything we have. Next comes awareness that to show our thanks to God for all we have been given, we should share a portion of those gifts in a way that advances God’s plan of salvation. Then come decisions about how great a portion to share and with whom. Most people feel good about getting to that stage. People like Mother Theresa go further: they say, “Since God has given me everything, I will share everything except what the Lord wants me to keep for my own use.” The ultimate decision, then, is not what to share, but what to keep.

WEEKLY REFLECTION: Twenty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time: Who is Jesus to you? Is He a miracle worker, judge, superhuman, or a friend? We cannot take walks or sit down and chat with Jesus. We know the stories about His life and teachings; but that all happened a long time ago. Still, Jesus is with us inviting us to spend time with Him and learn from Him. Consider your relationship with Jesus and pray for the grace to allow Jesus to be your best friend and counselor.

When I called, you answered me;

you built up strength within me.

~Psalm 138:3

NEIGHBORS HELPING NEIGHBORS FORUM: This fall Project G.R.A.C.E. will be planning and hosting a Neighbors Forum. The purpose of this meeting is to help provide resources and solutions to neighbors in need this winter. We hope to provide a positive discussion and outline a plan, perhaps to pool local resources and products. It’s a very simple idea: share information, resources and gifts to improve the lives of others.  We invite your ideas and enthusiasm, if you or a group you belong to would like to be involved, please let us know. Please check future bulletins for more information.

OUR DONORS ARE AT THE HEAD OF THE CLASS: Our Back to School Drive this year was very successful due to all the generous donors and hard working volunteers.  With your help Project G.R.A.C.E. assisted over 50 local students by providing backpacks, lunchboxes, school supplies and funds for sneakers and school clothing.  Thank you all for your assistance!

GET READY FOR THE SECOND ANNUAL TRIVIA BEE!: Last year we had 30 teams consisting of the area’s best and brightest trivia buffs competing for top honors.  This year we hope to make this exciting event even bigger and better! The date is set for Thursday, November 13th at the Winslow Homer Auditorium at the Scarborough High School. Whether you are a trivia expert who would like to get a team together, or would like to volunteer to help plan and work the event- we’d love to have your enthusiasm.  Please contact the Project G.R.A.C.E. office for more information.

IF YOU KNOW: of anyone in the Greater Scarborough area, who is struggling to meet basic needs, please consider referring them to a volunteer at Project G.R.A.C.E.  Referrals can be done anonymously. Call our office at 883-5111 or send an email to pgme@projectgracemaine.org

PROJECT G.R.A.C.E. NEEDS YOUR TIME AND TALENT!: Project G.R.A.C.E. is taking a summer break from meetings. We will resume our bi-weekly meetings on September 16th. If you can’t attend bi-weekly committee meetings, there are many other ways to volunteer, just give us a call and we can discuss opportunities.

CYCLES

OF FAITH

21st Sunday in Ordinary Time

Within the private chapel of the Pope at the Vatican, an icon referred to as the Mandylion of Edessa sits behind a gold frame. It purports to show the face of Christ on a cloth; legend has it that Jesus himself sent it to King Abgar of Edessa, having pressed his face into it to create the image. Like the Shroud of Turin, people look at this icon and wonder if it is truly an image of the Son of God.

How do you recognize Jesus? Jesus asks his disciples who the people think that he is; remember that the people had been awaiting a kingly savior, so this very common, ordinary man was thought to be Elijah, Jeremiah or one of the prophets. They had not seen him or met him, and even then might not have been convinced. But Peter, speaking from the heart, recognized him as "the Christ, the Son of the living God."

The physical characteristics of the Son of Man should have little or no matter in our lives today; what is important is to remember that we are taught that Jesus Christ is the light of all humanity, a light that shines so brightly for all the world to see that we have no trouble distinguishing it as anything else (CCC 748). Like Peter, look to your heart for the loving light, and boldly share it with the world to the best of your abilities.

FAITH FACTS: On August 27th, the Catholic Church celebrates the feast day of Saint Monica. Monica was born of a Chrisitian family in Africa in 331. She married Patricius, a man hostile to the Christian faith, and had 3 children. Their oldest child was Augustine, who rejected the faith and lived a pagan lifestyle. Through Monica's virtuous life and her many prayers to God for their conversion she lived to see both her husband and son embrace the faith. Augustine became a Doctor of the Church and a Saint.

A Prayer to Saint Monica: Exemplary Mother of the great Augustine, you perseveringly pursued your wayward son not with wild threats but with prayerful cries to heaven. Intercede for all mothers in our day so that they may learn to draw their children to God. Teach them how to remain close to their children, even the prodigal sons and daughters who have sadly gone astray. Amen.

Many thanks to the kind folks who brought in flowers for Mary’s Feast Day!

WORSHIP & SPIRITUALITY

Twenty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time

The scripture readings for the second half of summer in Ordinary Time changes away from the parables to Jesus’ journey to Jerusalem.

First Reading: Isaiah (Eliakim chosen by God)

Second Reading: Romans (Praise of God)

Gospel: Matthew (Peter the rock)

Key Passage: He said to them,“But who do you say I am?” Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”

Questions to ponder:

·        What church leader has most influenced your personal faith?

·        Why does Jesus command the disciples to be silent about his identity?

·        How can we develop a sense of awe before the works and the ways of the Lord?
